I'm So Glad You're Here: An Overview of Using Triple E to Improve Practice (Week 1)
Hi, I’m so glad you’re here.
Those words start every class I teach, so I thought I’d carry it over to my online presence as well. I say this every day simply because it’s true. Being intentionally joyful towards my students creates better relationships and better learning environments. As a middle school English teacher, I am passionate about helping students understand the power of reading, writing, and thinking. After students leave my classroom, I want them to know how to think critically and empathetically. This ability will allow them to engage with people who hold opinions different from their own without seeing those people as less than. Malcolm Forbes says it best, “The purpose of education is to replace an empty mind with an open one.”
Another educational concept I am passionate about is technology integration. Liz Kolb’s Triple E Framework (chart for reference below) is a great resource that clearly explains the benefits of integrated technology. The Triple E Framework’s mission is to use technology to engage, enhance, and extend learning. (Kolb, 2020, home). Developed with considerable credibility based on educational theory, Triple E focuses on learning goals and how to integrate technology to meet these goals. Pillared in engagement, enhancement, and extension, this framework provides an overview of how to utilize technology effectively in the classroom. Engagement ensures the priority is on the task, enhancement provides a sophisticated understanding of the content, and extension creates new learning opportunities (Kolb, 2015, Triple E). According to The Triple E Framework, these qualities should be considered and met when integrating technology into a lesson.
For my North Texas district, I think this model would be a great fit. It’s simple to understand and easy to implement. Triple E aligns with my district’s digital learning policy that states that “digital learning supports and promotes the application of best instructional practices related to technology integration in the classroom” (Digital Learning, 2024, para. 1). As for the relevance of this policy, it succinctly provides a clear approach to technology integration. When implementing any new policy, it’s important for it to be easy to understand to increase teachers’ willingness to learn and apply the concepts. Triple E is wonderful because technology integration can be summarized in as little as three words: engage, enhance, and extend.
Another positive aspect of the Triple E Framework is its alignment with ISTE and T-Tess standards. ISTE Standard 2.2a notes that educators should, “Shape, advance and accelerate a shared vision for empowered learning with technology by engaging with education stakeholders (ISTE, 2024, 2.2a). This standard focuses on collaboration with other educators to improve best practice. Through this collaboration, educators can directly work on pillars of Triple E by enhancing and extending their technology use to maximize student learning. The Triple E Framework also aligns with my state’s evaluation tool, T-Tess. T-Tess Dimension 1.4: Activities states, “Activities, resources, technology, and instructional materials that are all aligned to instructional purposes” should be used (TEA, 2024, p. 5). The Triple E Framework aligns with this standard by using technology that aligns with instructional purposes.
As Triple E articulates, technology is a tool to increase learning. Good educators understand that technology will never replace a good teacher, but rather it is a tool used to refine student learning. Educators should strive to improve their teaching practices, and adding technology to engage, enhance, and extend learning is a quality way to implement best practice. Educators like you who dedicate their careers to helping students grow and succeed are such a treasure, and like I say to my students every day, I’m so glad you’re here.

Hi Haylee. I LOVED your blog post. I love how positive you are. I can tell you really love what you do, enjoy it, and love your students! I’m so thankful for teachers like you!
ReplyDeleteI also chose Kolb’s Triple E’s framework. It’s just such a great framework. Easy to use. Great insight on good educators and understanding technology implementation into their teaching practices. So true. I strive everyday to improve my teaching practices.
Hey Haylee! I love how you start your classes with so much positivity I think it sets a great tone! The Triple E Framework seems like a perfect fit for your district. I also chose this framework for my assignment because I like how it simplifies tech integration with "engage, enhance, extend." You're doing an amazing job blending joy and tech to help your students grow!
ReplyDeleteHaylee, your post is so intriguing! I love how you included the illustration of Kolb's Triple E Framework in your post and how you used your signature phrase at the beginning to capture our attention.
ReplyDeleteYou made some valid points in your post as well which I agree with. For instance, as policies are forever changing in the world of education and within school districts, it IS important for teachers to have enthusiasm and the willingness to implement the concepts learned. Students can undoubtedly sense a true passion of teaching from educators and it will make the student(s)' learning experiences worthwhile rather than going through the motions of learning. . . Having more of these PD sessions on implementing concepts will definitely help teachers stay abreast of the changes.
Additionally, I appreciate how you emphasized that, "Good educators understand that technology will never replace a good teacher." In this fast-paced world of technology, I feel it is so important for teachers to know they are valued. What better way to help them feel empowered than to thoroughly explain technology changes via PD.
Excellent post, Haylee!
Hi Haylee!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your positive approach to teaching and your dedication to creating a welcoming learning environment for your students. Your focus on the importance of critical thinking and empathy in education is inspiring.
I also like using the Triple E Framework to integrate technology into the classroom. By emphasizing the core principles of this framework, you ensure that technology genuinely supports student learning.
It's evident that your passion for teaching and your commitment to your students' growth are making a significant impact. Great post!
Your emphasis on creating a positive and intentional learning environment is commendable! The integration of technology through the Triple E Framework is indeed a powerful approach, especially when it aligns so well with district policies and standards like ISTE and T-Tess.
ReplyDeleteI particularly appreciate how you highlight that technology should enhance, not replace, effective teaching. It’s essential that educators view technology as a tool to deepen learning, rather than just a digital replacement for traditional methods.
Great post Halyee - I enjoyed reading it!

Hello Haylee!
ReplyDeleteI appreciate your focus on creating joyful learning environments and fostering critical thinking skills in your students. That is exactly the kind of approach I pray my own kids receive from their teachers. I love how you've outlined the Triple E Framework. Your comments on using technology as a tool to enhance learning, rather than replace good teaching, are spot on. Your students are fortunate to have such a dedicated and forward-thinking educator.
