Working Project Plan: Digitial Storytelling Week 3
Working Project Plan: Digitial Storytelling Week 3
The story I’d like to explore is the negative impact book banning is having on the empathy and core knowledge of society. The impact of this story should emphasize the importance of the lessons learned through these classic novels. Ohler notes that a story arc map, “describes how the overarching story core plays out throughout the entire book, movie, or story” (Ohler, 2013). I'm using this map to include the elements of problem, question, solution, and response. The problem is that books are being banned, which creates a lack of knowledge about real world issues. The question explores how to bring these books back, and the solution is that reading and teaching these books will help educate society about very important issues. Our response should be that books should be used to help us prevent injustice and unfair treatment by showing us what happens when these injustices take place. Using these elements from Ohler’s Story Arc will help me create a meaningful and impactful story.
I could use this story in an educational setting to help spread awareness of the importance of reading these books that are being removed from the shelves. I’d also like to share it with my ELAR instructional coach, so she could take it and share it with appropriate district personnel. After the passing of House Bill 900, books have become at the forefront of education conversations. I’d like to add my thoughts to this conversation by sharing my finished project by discussing the negative impacts of this bill. When books are being considered illegal to teach, educators are limited which then limits the education of our most cherished responsibility, the children. ISTE Standard 3.3a emphasizes, “Empower educators to exercise professional agency, build teacher leadership skills and pursue personalized professional learning” (ISTE, 2024, 3.3.a). The Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) 10Bii states that students should practice, “developing an engaging idea reflecting depth of thought with specific facts, details, and examples” (TEKS, 2024, 10Bii). Both standards illustrate how important critical thinking is of the utmost importance. Being able to read these thought provoking and challenging books would so clearly allow students to develop these ideas that are both engaging and express a depth of thought not found in books that don’t evaluate applicable conflict.
To create my actual story website, I’m wanting to create a virtual museum that has an “exhibit” for each of the banned books. I’m focusing on the history of the book, reasons why it has been banned, and modern lessons we can learn from the novel. I’m wanting a dark academia theme for the museum to highlight the knowledge found within these books and the somber tone of them being removed from our shelves. I’m hoping this digital story is a great way to share something meaningful to me.
Professor Feedback: I want this to be a global story as I will be touching on House Bill 900 and how this is hurting public education’s literature availability as a whole which lessens our ability to teach students to think critically. I think this story telling will differ based on its audience. For example, when presenting to district personnel, I would focus more on the legality of the issue. When presenting to parents, I would focus on the lessons their students are missing out on. Because of the legal issues, I don’t think this story would be appropriate for students at this time. Hopefully one day these books will be back to literary canon as they result in some of the greatest lessons a developing young person can learn. I'd love continued feedback about how to make this story more impactful.

This topic is truly significant. I believe Ohler provides a solid framework for your story or website. I genuinely appreciate your concept of utilizing a website for storytelling. I look forward to seeing the books you choose.

ReplyDeleteThe contrast in the concepts of the story for both audiences is quite enlightening. I look forward to the compilation of the digital story and the impact it will have on educators and parents. I hope that when this story is made public, other education stakeholders will support the reintroduction of some of these banned books, as they can be beneficial for students.
